What the twelve palaces actually organize

Zi Wei Dou Shu, or Purple Star Astrology, arranges symbolic stars in twelve palaces. A palace names the topic under discussion; the stars and their relationships supply the traditional interpretive vocabulary. You need both before a paragraph can become more specific than a general personality statement.

Start with one question instead of trying to rate the whole chart. For a possible job move, write down the duties, environment and resource questions you want to explore. Then locate the relevant palace labels in your own result using the reference table.

Palace names, branch positions and Western houses

The twelve Earthly Branches label positions on the chart, while palace names label themes. One person’s Life Palace can occupy a different branch from another person’s. If an example places Life at Yin, do not copy its reading onto your Yin position without checking your own palace name.

These palaces are not Western astrological houses numbered in a different language. Their construction and symbolic stars belong to a separate system. A selected decade or year can also add another set of labels, so record both the palace and the time layer when taking notes.

Life and Body: an overview without a fixed personality label

Life is a starting point for the overall natal structure. Read its major stars, supporting stars and transformations in context. The Body Palace is a separate reference marker placed within an existing palace; it does not create a thirteenth life area.

Suppose a reading describes careful preparation. Compare how you prepare for a familiar task and a new one. A description that fits only when support is available has a condition worth recording, rather than becoming an unconditional statement about who you are.

Career, Wealth, Travel and Home have different jobs

Career concerns work roles and responsibility; Wealth concerns resources and their use; Travel concerns outside settings; Home concerns a living base. The same decision can involve all four, but their labels do not measure salary, job quality or property value.

For relocation, separate the new duties, net budget, external team and housing arrangements. This makes it easier to understand why a reading connects several palaces. It also prevents an attractive career passage from obscuring practical costs you still need to investigate.

Relationships and family: whose chart are you reading?

The Spouse Palace first concerns relationship themes within the chart owner’s structure. It is not a verified profile of a partner. Siblings, Friends, Parents and Children similarly provide topic categories; schools may extend their use, and a reading should identify the convention it follows.

A single person can read partnership themes without assuming that every sentence describes a future spouse. For cooperation, distinguish a familiar peer relationship from a broader network, then check the actual agreement and behavior rather than using a palace label to judge somebody.

Health and Wellbeing need ordinary evidence

Wellbeing or Inner Life is an entry point for satisfaction, interests and mental leisure. Health belongs to a traditional symbolic framework; it cannot establish a diagnosis, a cause of illness or a lifespan. These limits apply even when the wording sounds detailed.

If a passage makes you think about rest, keep a simple record of sleep, working hours and fatigue. A real symptom requires an appropriate health assessment. The useful step is the observable question, not treating the chart as a test result.

A worked example: connect a work question across palaces

In the usual natal arrangement, Life, Career, Wealth and Travel form Life’s San Fang Si Zheng group: the reference palace, two trine-related positions and the opposite palace. This is a way to read connections, not a method of counting favorable stars to obtain a success percentage.

Imagine moving from internal technical work to a client-facing project. Make four notes: your approach, the responsibilities, the resources and the outside environment. Check which placements the explanation cites for each. The exercise demonstrates a reading path; it does not establish that you should become a salesperson or accept the role.

A repeatable checklist for your own chart

Confirm birth inputs and the displayed layer. Find the topic palace, record major and supporting stars, identify transformations and related palaces, then read the explanation. If a palace looks empty, check the star category and display filters before assuming calculation failed.

Keep chart facts, interpretation and real-world questions in separate notes. Read one or two topics first, then expand. The empty-palace, Four Transformations and timing guides explain the next steps without requiring you to memorize the entire vocabulary at once.
